Jennifer Alphonso : Sales Coordinator
As the career title suggests, sales coordinators have a lot of coordination to do! They are the support system for the sales team of an organization and have to be excellent at multi-tasking, organizing, following up and customer service. Sounds like a busy job? It sure is! A sales coordinator with a real estate company, Jennifer Alphonso explains this better, in an interview with us:
I am currently working as Senior Sales Coordinator for Gulmohar Development Pvt. Ltd in Pune and have 4 years of work experience. My career focus is primarily to be satisfied with my job and to learn something new about my industry.
I began my career by working as an executive in the Front Desk Facility for a global BPO company, where I realized the need for an opportunity to work on a more challenging platform. I was then selected to work for a private real estate business in Pune where I learnt many dynamics of this industry. I handled clients from different countries, met their real estate requirements, coordinated with marketing and advertising media to create brand awareness as well as to attain clients.
The many challenges that come with this role interest me the most and keep me going through the day.
You have ample interaction with site representatives, marketing/ advertising media houses, clients and in turn, this improves your efficiency. Sales coordinators must always be vigilant and think about improving sales productivity by as many methods as possible. This career does not come with a set of instructions - you create your own rules and make them work for your company.
Most of the time, you start your day by attending to clients queries, addressing important mails on priority, updating all records simultaneously - this makes it easier to move on with other responsibilities. You also need to check that all marketing and advertising campaigns are in place (many times there may be technical issues which affect visibility and sales). You also coordinate with sales representatives to make client visits possible. There may also be client complaints which need to be handled well. You have to ensure that all sales materials are present at site, for client requirement or else the same needs to be procured. You will need to coordinate with technical, sales, accounts and managerial departments as well as vendors for sales related activities.
Having worked in different industries/ sectors has given me exposure to different work environments and functionalities. As a front desk facility, my responsibilities were less however handling employee grievances was a task.
Later on, as a brand manager for a private real estate business – I was learning a new work language and primarily working to create company awareness (through marketing/advertisements) and alongside, was able to handle clients and sell properties – now, this gave me work satisfaction.
I wanted to learn and grow further, got an opportunity to work with a UK based manufacturing company in its Export Business Development department – this job did have its perks (interacted with China and UK team to keep goods moving to client destination, and generating sales), however since I was confined to a desk job I decided to shift to a bigger real estate company. Here, based on my knowledge and profile, I was appointed as Senior Sales Coordinator.
I feel this experience has given me the self-confidence to communicate efficiently, the ability to multi-task, and deliver high standards of customer service – which I will gather to run a business in future.
Sales coordinators require knowledge to increase sales (irrespective of product / service), professional communication skills, excellent multi-tasking skills, organizational and administrative skills, a problem-solving attitude, and an ability to adapt to changes and to deliver high standards of customer service.
For me, these were skills developed over time with each work place. I always believe there is a solution to every problem – which keeps me going for every task. I have also done a course in digital marketing, which makes it easier to deal with online marketing activities.
Each skill is required to be successful in our career as well as personal growth. Our world has become really small with implementation of advanced technology – hence, some knowledge here be will very helpful.
When the market is down, it is definitely a challenge to make a sale – however, like I mentioned previously, there is always a solution – easy or difficult.
One of the best experience is when clients travel across another country to buy your product / service because of your ability to communicate and email all requirements as per his need (images / details/ quotations).
If you would like a challenging work place, love interacting with people, have the passion to excel in creating a sale everyday – you can definitely venture into the career of a sales coordinator. A degree in BBA followed by a PG program in marketing will be of value. A certified course in digital marketing will be an added advantage.
Learn something new every day. Be passionate in whatever you do.
