Hotel Managers typically take on a wide range of responsibilities, covering everything from Human resource, sales, business development and customer service to accounting, financial administration, food and beverage preparation, housekeeping and general maintenance. The diversity of experience in hotel management is greater than in any other profession.

Hotel management is primarily concerned with food and living space, the boarding and lodging needs of the guests, and more importantly their comfort, at all times. Broadly speaking, there are four core operational areas in a hotel: Front office, housekeeping, Food and Beverage Services and food production.

The main areas of work in a hotel are as follows

  • General Operations : responsibilities of this department include supervision, coordination, and administration of all other departments.
  • Front office : being the centre of all activities, major tasks are performed here include, providing information, making room reservations, check ins and check outs
  • Sales and marketing: a department that keeps in touch with travel agents, tour operators and corporate clients in order to sell hotel facilities. They also handle Advertising and Public relations
  • Food and Beverage: this department is the hub of the hotel industry and is responsible for all the food that is prepared and served.
  • House Keeping : the main function here is to make sure that all rooms are kept in order and all needs of guests are met

Compensation for a Hotel manager varies depending upon the length of service, level of education, management level and the employer. A career in hospitality opens up opportunities to earn a good living with attractive perks and a dynamic work environment. Hotel managers who exit from their profession can also move into larger areas of management, such as property management, administrative roles of large hotel chains or independent ownership of smaller hotels. Hotel Managers earn an average annual salary in the range of INR 4.5 lacs p.a to 5.0 lacs p.a.

Hotel management courses are customized for any level of specialization and the educational achievements most often viewed favorable include a bachelor's degree in Hotel and restaurant management. Most employers look for candidates with a prior hospitality experience in a related field however, if you are short of experience training is usually provided on the job. Alternatively, an internship with a reputed hotel can help you get an extensive amount of experience. With an MBA in Hospitality management the scope of your future is tremendous and can help you survive any economic storm. If you are already working in a hotel, try different positions, cross- train or move into different departments to steer ahead, learn the different cultures and revenue centers.
