Electrical Design Engineer

Career Overview

A career as an electrical design engineer combines two aspects or qualities, a passion for engineering and a creative bent of mind. Electrical design engineers constitute professionals from the engineering field, who design and develop new electrical equipments meant for commercial, industrial or domestic purposes, for eg. cars, trains, planes or power generation plants. Their job starts with researching on electrical power and concepts to design a new product. This is followed by creating preliminary designs by using CAD (computer aided design), testing and reviewing the product to correct design flaws before they go into production. The role is thus cross functional as it involves coordination with different departments like manufacturing, technical service and quality.Electrical design engineers either work to create new designs or re-evaluate old designs and their work responsibilities may include the following:

  • Co-ordinate with engineers and customers on existing engineering products and projects
  • Develop preliminary design, maintain and improve electrical instruments, components to enhance quality
  • Budget analysis of labor, equipment, material and selection of equipment
  • Inspect installations and ensure compliance with safety standards
  • Analyze and resolve customer complaints, detect problems and recommend solutions
  • Supervise and train team members
  • Documentation and preparing project schedules
  • Conduct surveys, study maps and other data to identify and correct problems in power system
Electrical design engineering is a versatile career with infinite opportunities. Electrical design engineers are crucial to employers as they ensure safety, economy and sustainability in their business operations.

Career Opportunities

There are a number of sectors that require electrical design engineers that include the manufacturing industry, the production & distribution of energy, transport & construction, power and engineering services firms. As companies aim to cut down costs of hiring direct employees, jobs are available on contractual basis also. Technological development has also given the scope for research and development in this field. Oil & gas and petrochemical industry also have a huge demand for these engineers who ensure safe, reliable and economic production. There are number of career choices and opportunities one can seek under the job title of electrical design engineer, some of them are:

Safety Engineer

These engineers inspect the work site and determine its health and safety. They ensure that safety regulations and standards are met. They may look into modifications of existing design and make necessary changes for prevention of non safety factors or losses that may arise.

Structural Design Engineer

They work for the construction industry and are responsible for designing any structure (bridges or buildings) keeping in consideration safety, economy and functionality. They provide technical advice and also help in the selection of construction materials. Apart from new builds they are also responsible for ensuring that older structures remain safe.

Power Engineer

They are also called as "power system engineers" who work within the field of energy engineering in industrial and commercial facilities. They are mainly responsible for the safe and efficient operations of equipments and machineries such as boilers, compressors, refrigeration units and air- conditioning in high rise buildings, hospitals & schools.
