Design Engineer

Career Overview

Design engineering as a career involves a good mix of imagination, innovation and a dash of creativity along with good knowledge of the engineering discipline. Design engineers develop design plans across a range of industries including medicine, transport, music, airplanes, cars, trains, phones, motorcycles, machines, computer systems, or communications. At the beginning of a project, the design engineer is given a description or ‘brief’ of what is needed and they will have to create a design of the product, or tweak the existing design in order to make it more efficient. While doing so, they take into account factors such as safety, reliability, efficiency, cost of development, availability of materials and impact on the environment.

Design engineers use advanced computer technology and applications, such as computer-aided design (CAD) software, to help them create and produce a design on a visual display screen. They work with a team of engineers along with other technicians, production staff and craftspeople.

If you have a knack for technology and engineering and an added creative thinking a career in design engineering may be exactly what you're looking for. Some of the responsibilities of a Design engineer are as below:

  • Design and develop new products as required and maximize product design taking into consideration performance requirements, material, cost efficiency, and company's ability to manufacture the product.
  • Prepare engineering drawings and assist moderately complex engineering assignments.
  • Provide technical guidance to management as required.
  • Constant interrogation of product design to identify and implement cost savings and performance improvement.
  • Write and present reports

Design is the fundamental to engineering and deals with the practical solution to real world problems. Design Engineers are hired to work across a variety of products that we use everyday such as cars to computers and toys to telephones, architecture and major infrastructure like bridges and roads wherein the design is the primary element that needs to be correct at first. Design Engineers play a crucial role in controlling company's costs in industries such as construction and building services, electronics and consumer goods manufacturing, automobiles, aerospace and shipbuilding. The average salary for a Design Engineer is INR 3.7 lacs p.a. With experience, you can gain promotion and rise up the ranks to become a project manager, strategic planner or consultant design engineer.

Education and Training

Degrees Required:
B.E (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical)

To become a design engineer, you need to do a degree in engineering with majors such as Mechanical, Civil or Electrical. Some employers prefer a specific degree like computer aided product design or engineering design and manufacture.Training is usually on the job alongside experienced design engineers. Design Engineers should continually upgrade their skills and take up additional certifications and obtain a chartered status for career advancement.

Career Opportunities

Design engineers can find a wide range of career opportunities in manufacturing firms, architecture, construction, electronics or power generation and research. Environmental engineering is another developing area where design engineers are involved in designing products that can be recycled, use fewer materials and consume less energy. The skills learnt in Design engineering are useful in many other engineering roles and product design fields.Growth opportunities are immense as one can move from Design engineering role to senior design engineer or project manager. Some also choose to move to strategic or management roles in later years of their career.

Design Graphics Technician

They work as part of an engineering team that designs and implements many different types of projects for example, electrical or mechanical products or large structures such as buildings, highways and bridges. They collect and interpret data; research ideas create design models and review reports.

CAD Specialist

They prepare engineering drawings manually and on CAD System, used to design and manufacture products. They may be responsible for developing the actual design or may just be required to draft from the specifications of other designers. They often work with engineers to develop the specifications for various systems, machinery, or structures.

Architect Assistant

They work with special computer programs, such as, AutoCAD, Corel Draw or databases for the projects and prepare and develop architectural drawings. They also support and help the architects they work with in finding the best solutions for complex technical problems like environmental challenges.
